Box Making Class

2-5 p.m., Grand Inspired Gallery & Makerspace, 501 E Main St.

Learn the essentials of making boxes and leave with one of your very own! Choose from a selection of hardwoods then tweak the size and style so the design is all yours. This is a perfect class for someone wanting to learn basic joinery and create something beautiful. No woodworking experience needed!

Wood Coasters

1-4 p.m., Grand Inspired Gallery & Makerspace, 501 E Main St.

Pick out the wood of your choice, then cut the coasters to size. We'll use the router table to give the edges a polished look. The design is up to you! We'll offer epoxy and woodburning so you can create something totally unique. You may not need the entire 3 hours allotted to this class, but the entire time is yours to stay and create. Appropriate for ages 14+ Under 16 with an adult.

Memory Cafe

9:30-11 a.m., Stoughton Hospital in the Bryant Health Education Center, 900 Ridge St.

The Memory Café meets the first Tuesday of the month. This session will feature Chair Yoga led by Suzanne Larsen, Yoga Therapist, of Ease Yoga & Wellness in Stoughton. At the Memory Café, individuals with memory loss and their care partners can join together for facilitated activities, informal conversations, and light refreshments. People can interact, laugh, find support, share concerns and celebrate without feeling embarrassed and misunderstood. There is no cost to participate.

Memory Cafés are designed for people with memory loss, mild cognitive impairment, early Alzheimer’s, or other dementias. The Memory Café is open to anyone without a formal referral or assessment. Those with dementia or memory issues may attend unaccompanied when appropriate or with family, friends, or care partners. This group is not suitable for people with dementia to attend alone if they have specific care needs such as problems with incontinence, mobility issues that require aid, high levels of anxiety, disorientation, or a history of wandering.

Contact the Stoughton Senior Center at 608-873-8585 with any questions. Pre-registration is helpful but not required.

Chocolate of the Caribbean

Brook Johnson from Yahara Chocolate and Tea is continuing his Chocolate World Tour with the Chocolates of the Caribbean! Most of the world's heirloom chocolate is grown in the Caribbean. Each session includes chocolate tastings! The cost is $6 per session. Call 608-873-8585 to register.

Hardanger Embroidery with Donna M. Olson

Classes are designed for beginners through experienced stitchers of this thread count Norwegian technique. Cost for the 15-week class is $50 and payment is made directly to the instructor on the first day of class. Call the Senior Center at 608-873-8585 to register. Kits are available from the instructor for all levels for $25 - $35. Kits include fabric, thread, needles and pattern. Please register by 8/23/2023.

Stoughton Firsts!

Wednesday, Sept. 6, 10:30 AM Nancy Hagen, President of Stoughton’s Historical Society, has stories to tell from her book, Stoughton Firsts. She will talk about Stoughton’s first inhabitants, settlers, buildings, etc. She published the book to celebrate Stoughton’s 175th anniversary! Come to learn and be entertained.

The Foundation Sci-Fi and Fantasy Book Group

The Foundation meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m., February-November. Copies of the discussion title(s) are available on the top floor near the elevator. This month’s selection is “The Fantasy of Terry Goodkind.” Why does this author’s work elicit such mixed responses? Choose from Wizard's First Rule, Death's Mistress, The Scribbly Man, or The Omen Machine.

What does DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) Actually Mean?

Lisa Schimelpfenig, director of Stoughton Area EMS, will talk about DNR. Patients have the right to make decisions regarding their medical care, including the right to refuse treatment or to issue do-not-resuscitate orders as part of an advance directive. Health care providers must comply with the patient's wishes regarding care.

Adult Craft Club: Ren Faire Craft

Covenant Lutheran Church weekly remembrance services

Covenant Lutheran Church is offering a weekly service of remembrance and lament every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. through the summer for victims of gun violence. The brief service will include scripture, candles, prayer, and tolling of the church bell. Names of those killed by guns in Dane County or in mass shootings in the country within the last week will be read. Covenant welcomes anyone in our community to remember and lament with us to support one another in grieving the deaths of fellow citizens. Covenant Lutheran Church gathers at 1525 North Van Buren Street.

Yoga for high schoolers

Do you know a high school student who could use a deep slow breath? Yoga can help teenagers carve out time for themselves to better cope with stress and anxiety. Stoughton Yoga is launching a pilot program from May through the end of August exclusively for high school students! Sign up for a 5-week series with one of our instructors for just $25 ($5 per class rate). Yoga mats and props are available to borrow free of charge. Yoga to Ease Chronic Pain

5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursdays

Ease Yoga & Wellness, 124 W. Main Street

Ongoing physical and emotional stress can manifest in the body as painful, chronic, muscle contraction. Originally designed to support breast cancer treatment, this restorative class is excellent for anyone managing chronic illness or pain. Practice includes muscular re-education to release held tension, restorative breath, therapeutic application of classic yoga poses, and a variety of practices to sooth the central nervous system and ease anxiety in body, mind and spirit. Special attention is given to addressing side-effects of treatment, and each practice is tailored to support participants. This 75-minute class is specific to support those navigating addiction recovery. Attend the body-layer while easing the mind and soothing the central nervous system in this restorative-based class. Sons of Norway-Mandt Lodge will host a series of free lecture videos produced by The Great

Courses. “The Vikings” are 30-36 minute lectures by Professor Kenneth W. Hart. The “Norse Mythology” series has 24-30 minute lectures presented by Jackson Crawford. Each lecture is a stand alone so you can attend when you can. Bring your own refreshments and the public is welcome.

Girl-2-Girl after-school programs

Every other Monday

Girl-2-Girl programs, sponsored by Eyes of Hope Stoughton, connect middle school and high school students with dedicated mentors in a comfortable, fun, after-school group at First Lutheran Church and the United Methodist Church buildings. Bi-weekly sessions center on navigating common challenges such as “Navigating Homework," "Keeping Focus," and "Resilience," plus a variety of creative activities.

Stoughton Yoga Saturdays

10-10:45 a.m. every Saturday.

Stoughton Yoga, 101 Silverado Dr., is offering gentle, pay-what-you-can yoga every Saturday from 10-10:45 a.m. for ages 14 and up. This is an inclusive and welcoming class, suitable for beginners and individuals who can't come close to touching their toes! No registration is necessary. Parkinson’s exercise program

Join Stoughton Physical Therapists Emily Devine, DPT, Jessica Hoyt, PTA, and Rachel Wojta, DPT, as they each lead an exercise class for individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. These classes are geared to improve function, mobility, quality of life, and reduce falls in a fun atmosphere. The classes use a punch card system. Attend any of the dates during this class session that work for you! Classes are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays starting Sept. 11 through Dec. 8.

Mondays are 1:15-2 p.m. with Jessica Hoyt, PTA, at the Community Health & Wellness Center (3162 County Rd B, Stoughton).

Tuesdays are 10:45-11:30 a.m. with Rachel Wojta, DPT, at the Oregon Senior Center (219 Park Street, Oregon).

Fridays are 11:15 to noon with Emily Devine, DPT, at the Community Health & Wellness Center (3162 County Rd B, Stoughton).

The cost for punch cards is $45 for 12 classes or $90 for 24 classes or $135 for 36 classes. Your punch card expires on December 8, 2023. To register for the Parkinson’s Exercise Program please go to stoughtonhealth.com and click on “Classes & Events.”

Virtual music and movement storytime

9:30-9:50 a.m. Tuesdays

Sessions are Tuesday mornings for a story, songs, and activities virtually on the Stoughton Public Library Facebook Page. Want even more fun? Kits will be available the first of each month to make a prop we will use in story time! No registration required. Recommended for ages 2-6, but older and younger children are more than welcome!

QiGong Online Classes

In-person: 1 p.m. Fridays at the Stoughton Area Senior Center

Online: 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays

QiGong is a gentle form of moving meditation, both relaxing and energizing and no prior experience with it is required. Classes are led by Jo Chern of Five Element QiGong. Library reading group: The Foundation

Explore Strange New Worlds with Stoughton Public Library’s Science Fiction & Fantasy book club. For more information, call 608-873-8585.

The discussion group, which meets at 6:30 p.m. the first Wednesday of every month at the library, 304 S. Fourth St. Participants usually do not all read the same title, but rather, the group explores science fiction and fantasy themes, authors, novels, and short stories via a choice of reading selections.
