Steam Is Platforming Nazi Iconography In Its Point Shop

Through an official Steam store, gamers can buy Nazi iconography for their profiles without fear of punishment.

Steam introduced the Point Shop in 2015 to sell video game-themed profile add-ons that you can get with points earned when buying games. Most of these are harmless, like a retro green-hued makeover, or Dark Souls' estus flask emoji, but with Steam platforming games like Nazi Furry and Sex with Hitler, that means gamers are able to purchase Nazi iconography through official channels to put on their profiles.

Furry Hitler sees you playing as an animal version of a genocidal dictator, the titular Adolf Hitler. In it, you relive "some of [his] best and worst decisions" while seducing animals in World War 2 uniforms. It's an incredibly problematic premise made worse by the fact that it comes with several Point Shop cosmetics, such as "Furry Girls 2", which includes animals in Nazi officer uniforms that you can proudly plaster on your mini profile. For context, that's the bite-sized version of a player's homepage that appears when you hover over their name.

Sex with Hitler likewise has Point Shop cosmetics, one of which is called "WW2_Gang_Mini". This comes with an anime girl in, again, a Nazi officer's uniform. Neither includes Swastikas since they're either swapped for dicks or paws, but the iconography is striking and immediately recognisable since the emblem is on a rectangular sheet of red fabric over the character's arm on what is clearly a Nazi uniform.

You can even get animated profile pictures styled on the Nazis. However, as you can see in the image embedded above, the names of these icons try to avoid the descriptor of 'Nazi' or anything adjacent, instead opting to call its officer "Adorable Girl". We see this with Furry Hitler, too, as it calls its Nazi Officer profile picture "Furry Girl 2". This is despite the others having more specific names, such as the Russian's "Soviet Girl".

Combine all of these cosmetics and you can design an officially sanctioned Nazi-themed profile. Given the rampant bigotry and toxicity among gamers, letting them buy Nazi cosmetics through a Valve-run store for their profiles without fear of punishment is a dangerous precedent.

These games have been on Steam for a while now without any recompense. Furry Hitler launched in May 2022, and Sex with Hitler - which features graphic pornography of, again, one of history's most evil men - has been around since January 2022. It even has several sequels, such as Sex with Hitler 2, Sex with Hitler: 2069, Sex with Hitler 3D, and Sex with Hitler: WW2. All of which Steam has not removed.

We reached out to Valve for comment, but it did not reply in time for publishing.
